Frequently asked questions
Is my chat uploaded?
No, not unless you choose to save it. Your chat is read and analysed in your browser, on your device. Close the tab or press “Clear session” and it is gone. If you save a chat, it is encrypted in your browser first, so we only ever receive unreadable data.
Can I save chats?
Yes, for free. Sign in with your email address and set an encryption password. Saved chats are encrypted in your browser with a key only you have. You can delete them, or your whole account, at any time in My chats.
What if I forget my encryption password?
Use the recovery code you saw when you set up your vault. We can't reset the password for you, because we never have it. Without the password and the recovery code, saved chats can't be opened by anyone, including us.
How do I export a chat?
In WhatsApp, open the chat and choose “Export chat”. The export guide shows the steps for iPhone and Android.
Which files work?
The .txt or .zip from a WhatsApp chat export, up to 50 MB. Exports from iPhone and Android in English, Dutch and German are supported.
Does it work for group chats?
Yes. Groups get extras like who replies to whom and who joined or left. In groups with more than 6 people, charts show the top 5 and group the rest as “Others”.
How does Yaprecap know which one is me?
A 1-on-1 export is named after the other person, so the remaining name is you. If the file was renamed, we simply ask.
Why do some names look like +31 6 •••• 12 34?
People without a saved name show up as a phone number in the export. We hide the middle digits.
How are the stats calculated?
A conversation ends after 6 hours of silence. Reply time is the time between the last message of one person and the first reply of another in the same conversation. A double text is another message 30+ minutes after your own with no reply. Night owl messages are sent between 00:00 and 05:00.
Is it free?
Yes, all stats are free.
Is Yaprecap made by WhatsApp?
No. Yaprecap is independent and works with the chat export that WhatsApp lets you make.
